What is Curating?

The Graph
First-time CURATOR? Complete this guide to claim your Signal Diversity I badge.

Introduction

Curating is considered a medium difficulty role; it involves significantly more risk than Delegation. This guide is designed to give a clear and easy-to-follow overview of the curation process.
Completion of this guide will earn you the Signal Diversity I badge.
For a deeper dive, visit The Graph Academy, or check out The Graph's Docs.

1. who might be a good fit

Curators are incentivized to signal early as the value of curation shares is tied to a bonding curve (hence the higher risk associated with curation). Curators should have the ability to review subgraph architecture and determine that it is both sound and appropriately formatted for its intended purpose.

2. Requirements

1. Curating requires access to either a hardware or software wallet.
If you do not own a non-custodial wallet (meaning one that is exclusive from a centralized exchange), Ledger is a well-known and trusted hardware solution for securely handling decentralized transactions. If you prefer to use a software wallet, we recommend Metamask.
2. You must have some ETH to pay for gas fees (we recommended at least enough for two transactions; one deposit, and one withdraw). You can check current gas prices here.
3. You must have some GRT to use for purchasing Curator Shares. There is no minimum requirement, but we recommend starting with at least 500GRT .

3. The Graph Explorer

Navigate to the Subgraph Explorer from The Graph's website.

4. Connect Wallet

Connect your wallet using MetaMask or WalletConnect and make sure you have some GRT available.
Click here to download Metamask or here to register with WalletConnect.

5. Identify a Promising Subgraph

Search the Subgraph Explorer for a promising subgraph; because Curators are incentivized to signal early, sorting by date can be a good place to start.

6. Subgraph Status

Check the subgraph status to see whether it is successfully indexed, unindexed, in progress, or failed (a failed subgraph would be a waste of time and money to signal, so make sure to avoid those).

7. Curation Signal

Check the current level of curation signal to determine whether the subgraph would benefit from being signaled and how much risk you incur by purchasing shares at the current point on the bonding curve.

8. Active Indexers & Curators

Take a look at the Indexers and Curators currently active on the subgraph; check to see if one of the Curators is also the subgraph publisher (if not, this is usually a red flag).

9. Check Entities

Make sure there are a proper number of entities and they are named appropriately.

10. Playground

Use the playground to inspect the entities and ensure they are in proper working order.

11. Research

Read the overview, research the project, and review the subgraph code (website and/or GitHub links are usually provided here).

12. Signal

After reviewing the project, and making sure the subgraph appears to be in proper working order, click “Signal” to purchase curation shares on the subgraph.

13. Finalize

Choose how many Curation Shares to purchase, and whether or not to infinite approve (saves on gas fees for future interactions on The Graph).
