A New Vision of Governance

Join a rich network of artists, developers, and users working together to build a permissionless, decentralized reputation system.

Governance by Merit
Badge-based governance offers a path forward for DAOs that wish to distribute voting power on the basis of proven merit as opposed to sheer token holdings.
Collusion-Resistant Voting
Emblem's NFT badges are non-transferrable, safeguarding badge-based governance against vote buying and bribery-induced corruption.
Community-Driven Reputation
The genesis badge set for each protocol is established with the blessing of the community's DAO or leadership. After the initial release, additional badges must be approved by existing badge holders.

Frequently asked questions

How much knowledge about crypto do I need to use Emblem?

Emblem currently requires a beginner-to-intermediate level of crypto experience to start earning badges. At the bare minimum, users should feel comfortable with crypto nomenclature, interacting with dApps, and securely using a hardware or software wallet.

What exactly is a badge?

Each badge is a neutered ERC-721 (NFT) smart contract. Minted badges are viewable within any wallets or applications that support NFTs. Badges are non-transferrable, so once you mint a badge, you won't be able to sell or send it to another wallet.

Does Emblem offer a governance or utility token?

Not as of yet; the Emblem team is currently exploring if the addition of a token would be beneficial to the project.

How does Emblem calculate the Leaderboard ranking?

Each protocol Leaderboard ranks users first by badge count, then by recency of the last badge awarded. Leaderboards are updated every five minutes.

How does Emblem track winners?

Emblem's subgraphs define the criteria for badges based on transaction and event data contained within smart contract logs. Each subgraph stores the Ethereum addresses of winners who meet the appropriate criteria. Periodically, Emblem's oracles update a registry of badges and winners, making the data available to other smart contracts and dApps.

How does Emblem award badges?

Users may request an NFT badge by sending a signed message to Emblem's server. Once the server verifies that the message sender is a valid winner, Emblem mints and sends the NFT badge. Because our subgraphs are open-source and deployed to The Graph's decentralized network, anyone can query to verify the legitimacy of a badge.

Is Emblem a DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization)?

We recognize that Emblem needs to be credibly decentralized to be treated as a legitimate reputation platform. In parallel with our efforts to support additional protocols, Emblem is developing the infrastructure necessary to become a badge-powered DAO. We welcome community input and feedback to help accelerate our path to decentralization.

How is Emblem funded?

Emblem is a proud Wave 1 grant recipient of The Graph Foundation. We are grateful for their support and are working hard to continue building the next generation of decentralized applications powered by The Graph.

Where can I go to learn more about badge-based governance?

We recommend starting with two essays by Vitalik, Moving beyond coin voting governance and Soulbound. Emblem draws heavily upon the arguments and concepts put forward in both works.

Do all badges grant equal governance rights?

Using Emblem's smart contracts, DAOs will have the ability to set the voting power for each of their badges. We anticipate that more challenging badges will grant participants greater voting power and governance rights.

Is Emblem open source?

Yes! Our subgraphs and smart contracts are all publicly available on Github.
